How to Do a Skin Self-Exam (And Why It Could Save Your Life)

Early detection is the single most powerful tool in the fight against skin cancer. A monthly self-exam takes just a few minutes and could save your life.

The ABCDE Rule

When checking moles and spots, look for these warning signs:

  • A — Asymmetry: One half doesn't match the other
  • B — Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred
  • C — Color: Uneven shading or multiple colors
  • D — Diameter: Larger than a pencil eraser (6mm)
  • E — Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or new symptoms

Step-by-Step Self-Exam

  1. Stand in front of a full-length mirror in good lighting
  2. Examine your face, ears, scalp (use a comb), and neck
  3. Check your chest, torso, and both sides of your arms
  4. Examine your legs, feet, and between your toes
  5. Use a hand mirror to check your back and buttocks

When to See a Doctor

If you notice anything that fits the ABCDE criteria, or any spot that's new, changing, or just doesn't look right — see a dermatologist promptly. Don't wait.
